Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are first-responders who are deployed to medical emergencies with the goal of saving lives. EMTs with Boston EMS play a critical role in keeping the city’s residents and visitors safe.

GBAAI’s emergency medical services pathway gives participants the opportunity to progress from 1) pre-apprenticeship training to 2) apprenticeship.

1) Pre-apprenticeship

City Academy is a talent pipeline that trains Boston residents for City jobs. Through City Academy, pre-apprentices begin by taking a 3-week bridge course that reviews the work of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). The following 6-month EMT course prepares trainees to take the national and state EMT certification exams.

2) Apprenticeship

Successful graduates of pre-apprenticeship will have the opportunity to apply for an apprenticeship with Boston EMS. During the 6-month apprenticeship, EMTs continue their training at the Boston EMT Recruit Academy while working in the field as Boston EMS recruits. Apprentices earn benefits and a stipend of $837 per week. Upon completion of their apprenticeship at Boston EMT Recruit Academy, EMTs with Boston EMS earn starting wages of $57,000 per year.
