Facilities maintenance technicians keep buildings and properties in safe and serviceable condition. Technicians use a wide range of maintenance skills, including basic plumbing, electrical, and mechanical skills; cleaning and preventative maintenance; pest management; and landscaping.

GBAAI’s facilities maintenance technician pathway gives participants the opportunity to progress from 1) pre-apprenticeship training to 2) apprenticeship to 3) higher education.

1) Pre-apprenticeship

YouthBuild Boston provides 3-week pre-apprenticeship training that focuses on job readiness skills.

2) Apprenticeship

Trainees are placed in facilities maintenance technician apprenticeships with property manager WinnResidential. In these jobs, they learn all aspects of indoor and outdoor facilities at WinnResidential properties. Apprentices earn benefits and initial wages starting at $16.50 per hour and can work toward wages of $18.50 per hour by the end of their 18-month apprenticeship.

3 ) Higher education

As part of their apprenticeship, participants complete 8 college credits worth of free coursework with Wentworth Institute of Technology. These classes culminate in a Certificate in Facilities Management and prepare students to take the Certified Facility Manager exam, administered by the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA). College credits earned from these classes can also be applied toward a bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management if the apprentice chooses to continue their education.
