The Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau (GBCVB) is partnering with Tourism Diversity Matters (TDM) to support the GBCVB’s inaugural apprenticeship program. The collaboration is designed to support workforce development and economic enhancements within the tourism and hospitality industry.
“Destinations now play an essential role in workforce development,” said GBCVB CEO Martha J. Sheridan. “We are so proud to be working with Tourism Diversity Matters and pioneering this work in Boston, with our core values of equity, accessibility, diversity, and inclusion underpinning the entire model.”
TDM’s Apprenticeship Program is a 600-hour paid rotational opportunity for diverse professionals interested in tourism and hospitality careers. The apprentices gain experience in various areas, including event management, marketing, communications, public relations, sales, finance, sports management, and more. At the end of the program, the apprentice is offered a full-time position with the program host or another participating partner.
“The program, originally launched in Philadelphia more than two decades ago,” states Greg DeShields, executive director of Tourism Diversity Matters. “Currently, TDM has Apprenticeship Programs in Columbus, OH; Chicago, IL; Washington, DC; and Minneapolis, MN. We continue to expand and will soon have programs in Philadelphia, PA; Houston, TX; and New York City.”
The GBCVB apprenticeship program with TDM is slated to begin in September and will include an extensive training session conducted by the GBCVB to ensure proper support for the candidate. Ultimately the apprentice will experience three rotations, the first with the GBCVB, followed by two additional rotations with industry partners selected by the GBCVB. The entire apprenticeship will end on December 30, 2022.
